Fashion in Jamaica and the region exists, much to my annoyance, almost outside of an international aesthetic. It's my desire, then, to build a bridge between what is innately cultural, and the international industry, all the while highlighting trends and shifts within both spheres.

Yigal Azrouël 2010 Spring/Summer Collection
Yigal Azrouël saying he had "precision" and "bold lines" in mind for his spring women’s collection, the designer presented asymmetric straps and geometric cut-outs on body-conscious jersey dresses and flesh-baring crop tops. Elsewhere, he went in a streetwise direction by way of black leather shorts, spiffed-up sweat pants and a spare palette of nude, black and white broken up by a rare shot of yellow. In that way, the collection was very of-the-moment, but in his pursuit of all things edgy and sexy, Azrouël may have lost some of the sophistication of his past collections.
Shown on the runway with the women’s collection, the men’s wear reflected the designer’s beach-comber lifestyle. Trousers and shorts had rolled cuffs and fold-over waists and were pieced out of mixed media, sometimes to create the illusion of layers. Azrouël’s men’s formula has changed little in a few seasons, but this is no time to mess with it. The signature style- the languid and disheveled layers, all washed and rumpled- is now more on-trend than ever.
