Fashion in Jamaica and the region exists, much to my annoyance, almost outside of an international aesthetic. It's my desire, then, to build a bridge between what is innately cultural, and the international industry, all the while highlighting trends and shifts within both spheres.

Valentino Pre-Fall 2011
I was largely unimpressed by Valentino's pre-Fall collection, like most of its other recent collections designed by Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri. With knee-length lace frocks, and its emphasis on eveningwear by way of daywear, the collection was plenty feminine. The usual Valentino motifs (ruching, ruffles, roses, red) were present, too, and I suppose for the red-carpet crowd, this is fine enough. But I just found everything a little too pretty and safe. Half-way through, I was bored by the muted palettes, and that rather uncomfortable sense of déjà vu.
