Fall 2012: Jason Wu

With lots of Chinese influences, the Fall 2012 collection from Jason Wu was not only stately and well-tailored, but sober (by his standards) and quite impressive. "Military" seems an early trend for Fall, and Wu played that up with sharp jackets and poncho-like coats.
Gone were the ruffly young-socialite dresses; in its play we had grown-up sophistication, and a hell of a lot of studded accessories.

CFDA 2011 Nominations!

Tonight Diane von Furstenberg and Steven Kolb announced the nominations for the 2011CFDA awards. Furstenberg told the crowd that the organization would be putting together an auction for the victims of the Japan natural disasters. “We’re going to put together big packages. Designers, clients, suppliers–everyone is getting involved.” Kudos to them. As for the nominees, read them below.

Jason Wu 2011 Fall/Winter

Not too impressed by the Jason Wu collection, but it was nice enough. I at least appreciated the elegance and sophistication, but if there isn't that much to a collection than what meets the eye, boredom quickly sets in. As I have said though, Wu is a designer whose aesthetic is prettiness, so I really don't expect to see him doing any deeper than that any time soon (if ever). Nice, wearable pieces none-the-less, that i'm sure will be grabbed up by the chic, cocktail crowd. Oh. And look out for some of those gowns on Oscar night.

Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2011

I suppose it's gonna be hard for Jason Wu to break out of cocktail dresses and red-carpet gowns having dressed the likes of First Lady Michelle Obama. In any case, Fall is party and award season, so for designers like Wu, that's big business.
That aside, the collection was excellent. Colours were muted and moody without being sombre, with trousers tailored and oh-so-chic. A few pieces here too, were minimalistic and under-stated, somewhat of a first for Wu, a designer who is known for embellishing his frocks with everything from sequins to feathers. Having looked at this collection more than once, i'm somewhat convinced now that maybe Wu is more than a one-trick pony. And as his second pre-Fall collection, it seems like he's only getting better.

Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2011

Imbued with a little sex (sheer) and humour (those 50's librarian owl glasses), the Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2011 collection ably balanced beautifully tailored sportswear against girlish froth.

There were plenty of Wu’s familiar motifs, such as outsize jabot collars and striped knits, and while the collection was generally impressive, some looks were a bit too self-aware. That being said, there were some great trousers, pleated and wide, and some lovely, filmy blouses in point d’esprit, organza and lace chiffon.
This spring/summer 2011 show also launched his new range of handbags and shoes, under the label, Miss Wu, and a collection of nail-polishes.
